- A new interview featured on PBS News Hour highlights the alarming rise in autism diagnoses among Somali Americans in Minnesota, where rates are significantly higher than the national average. Somali families face numerous challenges, including cultural stigma, delayed diagnoses, and a lack of culturally sensitive care providers. Early intervention is critical for better outcomes, but long waiting times and misconceptions within the community often hinder timely treatment. Efforts by activists and community leaders are helping to raise awareness and foster acceptance, with initiatives like the Somali Parents Autism Network and the introduction of the Somali term “maangaar” (meaning “unique mind”) to promote a positive view of autism. However, significant barriers remain, and the Somali community continues to face difficulties in accessing support and understanding autism.
