- An innovative job search platform that aims to recruit employees with autism and other neurological differences has been launched. Known as the Neurodiversity Career Connector, the new platform includes major employers like Microsoft, Google, Freddie Mac, and others. The employers utilizing this program strive to not only match neurodivergent job seekers with meaningful positions, but also provide them with the training and support needed for career growth and success.
- Stat News recently featured an impassioned Op-Ed written by Amanda Joy Calhoun, a psychiatry resident at Yale’s School of Medicine’s Child Study Center. Her piece calls for medical care system reform for people with autism. Calhoun has firsthand experience with this topic. Not only is she a medical doctor, she has a brother with severe autism. In her article, Calhoun lists many concerning health care inequities that people with autism face. These include lack of formal training for medical personnel on how to treat people with autism, the increased likelihood of being physically restrained if admitted to the hospital, the overabundance of research that focuses on children while leaving adults with autism behind, the underrepresentation of severe autism in research, as well as inadequate research that includes BIPOC autism.
- MedPageToday reports that the FDA has expanded the approval of viloxazine extended-release capsules (Qelbree) to include adults with ADHD. Viloxazine is the first nonstimulant ADHD drug for adults in 20 years. The recommended starting dosage for adults will be 200 mg once daily with a maximum dosage of 600 mg once daily. The medication was initially approved last year for children ages 6 to 17.
- The Child Mind Institute has launched the Dare to Share campaign in honor of May Mental Health Awareness Month. The campaign features celebrities and children revealing stories about their own challenges and sharing how they found the courage to ask for support. Dare to Share includes downloadable tailored resources and a video library.
