- The U.S. Department of Education’s most recent annual report shows that more than half of states have failed to meet their obligations to special education students under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) during the past two years. Only 21 states qualified for the “meets requirements” designator for the 2020-2021 school year. Since COVID-19 impacted the data collected, the Education Department did not give any state the problematic labels of “needs intervention” or “needs substantial intervention.”
- A new cross-sectional study from Canada has discovered that children are more likely to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder when a same-sex parent also has the condition. The lifetime likelihood of an anxiety disorder diagnosis in offspring was approximately three times higher when a parent of the same sex had anxiety. However, there was no significant association observed when the parent of the opposite sex had the disorder. The same-sex association was more prevalent in females than males.

- A national hotline has been launched that provides easy access to help for anyone experiencing a mental health crisis. The new 988 phoneline takes over for the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and now has an expanded mission. The line will still offer support for people at risk of suicide but will also provide additional aid to those facing mental health crises. Autism advocates are particularly optimistic that 988 will benefit people with ASD and other developmental disabilities since these conditions often have co-occurring mental health challenges.
