New Webinar on Microbiota Transplant for Adults with Autism from ASU’s Autism/Asperger Research Program

May 22, 2023

Free Event Takes Place on May 24 & May 30 and Covers Results of Their New Phase 2 Clinical Trial

Professors James Adams and Rosa Krajmalnik-Brown along with Dr. Richard Frye will present the results of their Phase 2 clinical trial of Microbiota Transplant Therapy (MTT) for adults with autism in webinars on May 24 and May 30, 2023. Their exciting new two-part study was randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled for part 1. During part 2, the placebo group received a similar treatment as the original treatment group, with the treatment group receiving an extra eight weeks of microbiota transplant. The study found that MTT was generally safe and well-tolerated. Interestingly, study participants tolerated the microbiota capsules better than the placebo capsules. When the study concluded, the authors discovered that the treatment group’s autism symptoms improved more than the placebo group. They also found through daily stool records that the treatment group’s bowel movements improved more than the placebo group. An especially compelling finding showed that the microbiome of the treatment group became more similar to the donor, with increased beneficial bacteria. Overall, this new study suggests that MTT is effective for treating autism and GI symptoms in adults with autism and provides critical insight into improving dosing to potentially improve clinical benefit.
