Day Programs and Employment Services Hit the Hardest
Data collected in July by the American Network of Community Options and Resources, or ANCOR, showed that 77% of organizations serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities have reported shutting down and discontinuing programs due to COVID-19. Unfortunately, 16% of those programs are never expected to reopen again. Most closures occurred in day programs and employment services, which experienced social distancing challenges coupled with low utilization. Providers have also been saddled with increased operating costs due to personal protective equipment, COVID-19 testing, cleaning supplies, training and overtime. These closures will most likely be detrimental for those with disabilities who live in parts of the country where service providers are few and far between.
