- Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) is an illness resulting from a group of inherited conditions which causes the body to improperly break down mucopolysaccharides (long chains of sugar molecules found throughout the body). New research suggests that due to a wide variety of symptoms and the similarity to other diseases, MPS can be misdiagnosed as neurological diseases such as autism, psychomotor hyperactivity, and intellectual disability. MPS has also been misdiagnosed as rheumatology and orthopedic disorders like juvenile idiopathic arthritis, Perthes disease, rickets, and muscular dystrophy.

The new program provides travelers with hidden disabilities a Sunflower Lanyard. By wearing a Sunflower Lanyard, DEN employees will recognize that the individual has an invisible disability and may need extra support getting through the airport. Sunflower Lanyards are available from DEN Ambassadors or Customer Service Agents at customer service information booths throughout the Denver airport.
