- While prenatal maternal infection has received attention as a preventable and treatable risk factor for autism, findings have been inconsistent. A meta-analysis of 36 studies from researchers at Columbia University and The New York State Psychiatric Institute found the weight of the evidence supports such an association. The association varied little across the types of infections or when they occur during pregnancy. The researchers estimate the incidence of autism would be reduced by 12%-17% if maternal infections could be prevented or treated.
