- The FDA has granted a Breakthrough Device Designation to JelikaLite Corp for its Cognilum System which has shown promise in reducing symptoms of moderate to severe autism spectrum disorder in pediatric patients who are 2 to 6 years of age. According to the company, their wearable medical device combines non-invasive brain stimulation with near-infrared light, EEG sensors, and AI personalization platform. Cognilum demonstrated improvements in autism symptoms through gains in communication and daily living skills.
- A new study has discovered that individuals with autism who are Black, Hispanic/Latino or Asian/Pacific Islander have higher odds of presenting with comorbid health conditions. The study showed that these groups are at increased risk of having diabetes, cardiovascular disease or hypertension, compared to white individuals with ASD.
- According to recent research, American doctors are unclear about their legal responsibilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA mandates that patients who have a disability receive reasonable accommodations during medical visits. The research involved surveying 714 doctors. The survey showed that 35.8% of the doctors reported knowing little or nothing about their legal responsibilities under the ADA, 71.2% answered incorrectly about who determines reasonable accommodations, 20.5% did not correctly identify who pays for these accommodations, and 68.4% felt they were at risk for ADA lawsuits.
- A new article featured in Psychiatry Advisor details that there is a higher incidence of autism diagnosis or suspected diagnosis by age 48 months in lower median household income census tract level. The article draws on information from the latest Autism and Developmental Disabilities Network surveillance program report on children aged 4 years.
- A community outside of Lansing, Michigan is the first to open a museum dedicated solely to autism history. The museum opens on February 4 with a reception hosted by the Xavier DeGroat Autism Foundation.
