Research Shows Roleplaying Games Help Reduce Social Anxiety and Boost Self-Confidence

A European study published in the journal Autism has revealed that tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) like Dungeons and Dragons offer a safe and supportive environment for adults with autism to build social connections and boost self-confidence. Led by researchers from the University of Plymouth, Edge Hill University, and Dalarna University, the study found that participants, motivated by a desire for community, could engage in meaningful interactions without the pressure to mask their autistic traits. The collaborative nature of the game helped break down social barriers, allowing players to reframe their life challenges through heroic in-game narratives, which fostered a sense of inclusion and emotional growth. Participants reported that the experience not only improved their social skills but also helped them reflect positively on their real-life journeys. These findings suggest that TTRPGs can reduce social anxiety, promote self-compassion, and support mental well-being for those in the autism community.
