- Individuals with ASD are 3 times more likely to self-harm than those without the disorder, according to a new systematic review and meta-analysis of 31 studies. The excess odds of self-harm were found in both children and adults across geographic regions and regardless of study designs, methods and settings.
- A new study has examined the safety of polypharmacy (taking more than 4 drugs at one time) for adults with autism and intellectual disability. The research found only a small number of adverse events were identified, mostly due to the drug risperidone. Half of the events were related to nervous or metabolic systems. One-third of the reactions were not previously described in the drug information sheet.
- Learn the Signs. Act Early. (LTSAE) is a CDC program which provides free developmental monitoring resources to increase early identification of children with developmental delays and disorders. A recent paper examined the program’s effectiveness when paired with Early Head Start (EHS) programs. The paper’s findings showed the combination of the two programs proved very helpful to parents to have conversations about their children’s development which resulted in evaluations and treatment.
