- An expert panel of child neuropsychiatry and sleep specialists have developed practice tools for screening and monitoring insomnia for children and adolescents with ASD. They recommend insomnia screenings for all children with autism and referring to a sleep specialist if a comorbid sleep disorder is suspected.
- Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, has introduced a bill that aims to improve Supplemental Security Income for nearly 8 million seniors and those who have disabilities. These benefits have not been updated since the 1980s. The Senator’s bill aims to stop punishing the program’s participants who have part-time jobs, marry or save for the future. He’s trying to attach parts of his bill into the $3.5 trillion reconciliation package that Congress is currently considering.
- Two Dutch researchers are championing an effort of categorizing people with autism into subtypes. They believe this endeavor may identify people who have particular genetic variants in common that could be associated with specific medical issues. The team also suggests that subtyping can assist researchers identify who benefits most from a certain type of support.
- The European Respiratory Society annual meeting included recent research which demonstrated that after switching from breast milk, babies up to 12 months whose protein intake came largely from meat products rather than dairy, fish or eggs showed more than eight-fold increase of developing asthma by age 6.
