- After a two year break, the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) will hold a full committee meeting on July 21-22, 2021. This will be a virtual event. As always, IACC welcomes public comments and live feedback.
- The Child Mind Institute has published a list of suggestions for parents of children with ADHD to plan for a successful summer which provides structure, support, and fun during the long break.
- A new study suggests that scores of inborn errors of metabolism (IEM) may be linked with autism. Since many IEMs are treatable, children with ASD should receive a diagnostic work-up to look for these conditions. IEMs can present as autism-like behaviors. However, if the IEM is treated, those behaviors could be ameliorated.
- ARI is hosting a webinar titled, “Middle and Older Adulthood in Autism: Brain and Behavioral Outcomes” on July 7 at 1 p.m. EDT. Dr. Gregory Wallace is the host of the event. He is a trained neuropsychologist with extensive experience working with individuals with autism across the lifespan. Dr. Wallace is currently an Associate Professor of Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
- Richard Frye, a pediatric neurologist and autism researcher, speculates that mitochondria could be the missing link between autism and the environmental influences that contribute to the development of the disorder. His views are featured in a new article which examines the role mitochondria plays in a healthy brain.
