- A comprehensive analysis of eating disorders linked to autism was recently published by Eating Disorders Victoria, an Australian advocacy organization. The group examines several different types of eating disorders experienced by those on the spectrum including anorexia, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), food sensory avoidance issues, and undernourishment.
- A new learning health network called the Autism Care Network has launched in 20 different sites across the country. The network will not only provide conventional autism treatments but will also collect data from patients, test treatments, and share best practices among the other network sites and as well as other providers.
- Parents in New Hampshire want a new bill passed that flips the burden of proof onto school districts to show that their IEP decisions were valid during special education hearings. However, representatives from the state’s school boards and school administrators argue that the legislation would make hearings more lengthy and expensive for parents.
- A new study states that the prevalence of ASD in a sample of transgender young adults is 22.5%. The research also suggests that young transgender individuals who also have ASD are at risk for mental health issues.
- According to a new unpublished study, deleting the autism-related gene CHD8 from the intestines causes significant gastrointestinal and behavioral changes in mice. These results have implications for humans too. Close to 90% of people with CHD8 mutations report gastrointestinal issues. Most of these people also hold a diagnosis of autism.
