New App Incorporates Artificial Intelligence to Assist Pediatricians in Identifying Cases

Cognoa, a Pediatric Behavioral Health Company, has recently requested clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for their revolutionary new smartphone app which uses artificial intelligence to help diagnose autism in children. The app works simply. A pediatrician would grant parents access to the Cognoa app once a developmental concern has been identified. Through the app, parents answer a 15-minute behavioral questionnaire and then upload two videos taken of their child’s conduct in their natural environment. Artificial intelligence then interprets the data and sends its findings to the pediatrician. At that point, the pediatrician considers the app’s results coupled with their own observations to make a final diagnosis. The scientists at Cognoa hope that with their novel tool, children with autism will be diagnosed earlier and receive critically important therapies sooner resulting in better outcomes.
