New and Improved Delivery Method to Stop Cluster Seizures
The Chicago based pharmaceutical company Xeris has recently received an FDA fast-track designation for its diazepam formulation which utilizes an auto-injector for quick and easy medication delivery. Diazepam is a drug used to treat acute repetitive seizures, also known as cluster seizures. Around 30 percent of people with autism also have epilepsy and therefore are at risk for seizures. Auto-injectors are disposable, spring loaded syringes designed to deliver a single dose of a drug. EpiPens used to stop life-threatening allergic reactions use a similar design. Xeris is encouraged by their new product, which works across a range of injection sites and utilizes a small concentrated dose of diazepam. Other company’s drug regimens to control epileptic seizures require multiple doses and more challenging delivery models.
