Give and Get on Giving Tuesday 2019!

December 04, 2019

By SafeMinds Executive Director Lisa Wiederlight

On Giving Tuesday, you can donate to SafeMinds through your purchase of the new children’s book, “Ballerina in a Box,” by Arlene Grant. “Ballerina in a Box,” available in English, French, German, Russian, and Spanish, features the story of Anastasia, a ballerina who loses her confidence after an injury. The book is a heartwarming story for all ages sharing concepts of giving, courage, and sustainability.

For every book sold now through December 21, the author will donate $1 to help SafeMinds efforts to end the autism crisis by promoting environmental research and advocating for effective treatments.

Ms. Grant stated, “SafeMinds believes that there are environmental factors affecting the development of autism for many, and that these triggers are responsible for the tremendous increase in autism prevalence since the late 1990s. Helping prevent the development of environmentally-induced autism and helping those with autism is another of my passions. I began volunteering with SafeMinds photographing their annual fundraiser, Fashion Rocks Autism, five years ago. Because dance is known to help some persons with autism, SafeMinds is a great charity to support.”

A recent review of “Ballerina in a Box,” from a mother in Russia follows:  “An amazing story that inspires you to overcome your fears not only children but also adults. Colorful illustrations complement the picture, this book has become my daughter’s favorite book.”

“Ballerina in a Box” is now officially available at

Please also consider purchasing holiday cards and gift wrap from The Brian Watkins Gallery, which is run by a young artist with autism, and SafeMinds will receive 30% of the net profit donated back from the Gallery! What a great way to support a young adult with autism and SafeMinds!
